Note: On July 20, the NCCU Office of Academic Affairs revised the Class Selection Schedule for 2026 Fall Semester. Both the first initial course selection (第一階段初選登記) and  enrollment for cross-campus course (國內校際選課申請) will begin on August 25. Please see the details below.

Through six guest lectures, this course explores issues of national identity, colonialism, social movements, popular culture, digital labor, and knowledge production from an Inter-Asia perspective.

The course begins with a comparison of Australia and Taiwan, exploring the connections between colonial legacies, multiculturalism, and nation-building.

The second session interrogates how historical crises transformed the political imagination of “Asia,” revealing a deeply contested space shaped by tensions between decolonial solidarity and imperial expansion. Students will be invited to rethink what Asia means and reflect on the contemporary significance of Inter-Asia.

The third session explores the development of fashion in Taiwan, examining how popular culture has been shaped by colonial legacies, nationalism, Japanese cultural influences, K-pop, and global consumeris.

The fourth session moves through three conjunctures of digital labor—remote work, platform work, and blockchain gaming. Taking “plasticity” as a key concept to examine how digital labor has been deployed to control and transform populations over time.

The fifth session explores psychoanalysis as both a method and a practice of cultural studies, drawing on the speaker’s own intellectual and research journey.

At the classroom session on the final day morning, Reuters senior editor James Pomfret will discuss the challenges of reporting in Asia and Greater China at a time of growing China-U.S. geopolitical tensions and uncertainty.
